Custom Made for Your Unique Qualities

custom made Tiffany lamps

People should be unique beings – not sheep herded by trends and fads.  Your tastes should reflect exactly who you are, and not an approximation.  With that said, you should start with the little things, such as custom made Tiffany lamps.  Tiffany lamps go in-and-out of style every so often, but they still represent a simple time in home décor history.

No two Tiffany lamps look the same, but you should still make an effort to find one that suits your personality best.

What is a Wall Sconce?

Author: LampLampLamp

stained glass sconces

Wall lights, or sconces, are mounted on the wall and create soft ambient light and subtle background lighting.  Wall lights can be directional or they can emit light all around.

Wall sconces come in different styles, with the most popular emulating the look of stained glass windows; these can be found in several different outlets from secondhand retail stores to online stores that specialize in the wall sconces or light fixtures.

A Look at Stained Glass

Author: LampLampLamp

Stain glass gifts

Stain glass gifts are among the best presents to give and receive.  It’s traditional sensibility and unique look makes it a cornerstone in art.  But how did stained glass come about initially?

Colored glass has been produced since ancient times.  Both the Egyptians and the Romans excelled at creating small colored glass objects.  In the Early Christian churches of the 4th and 5th centuries, there are many remaining windows which are filled with ornate patterns of thinly-sliced alabaster set into wooden frames, giving a stained-glass like effect. Similar effects were achieved with greater elaboration using colored glass rather than stone by Muslim architects in Southwest Asia.

In the 8th century, the Arab chemist Jabir ibn Hayyan (Geber) scientifically described 46 original recipes for producing colored glass in Kitab al-Durra al-Maknuna (The Book of the Hidden Pearl), in addition to which 12 recipes were inserted by al-Marrakishi in a later edition of the book. Jabir also described the production of high quality colored glass cut into artificial gemstones.

For the Art Fan in You

Tiffany lamps

If you’re looking for inspiration or some sophistication to add to your home, you can’t go wrong with Tiffany lamps

Tiffany lamps are lamps with a stained glass shield.  Though they’re largely attributed to the Art Nouveau movement, they can really find a home anywhere.  They make very excellent decorative pieces, as well as having a practical use.  If you have an empty spot on that bedside table of yours, I bet a Tiffany lamp would look especially great there.

Custom-made Stained Glass Window Corners

Author: admin

I have always loved and admired stained glass art-work and Tiffany lamps, but never came across a pair of strained glass window corners before.  This relatively new form of artistic expression has swept the art glass scene off their feet.  I found a fabulous custom made pair by Diana Barbor.

Diana’s stained glass corner windows add instant character to any room.  I mounted mine onto the bay window in the kitchen.  My neighbor ordered a pair and she mounted them on both her living room front windows.  They look just wonderful (whether you are looking from the inside or the outside of her home).  Stained Glass Window Corners

A brief intro to Meyda Tiffany Lamps

Thirty years ago, Meyda Tiffany was founded when Meyer Cohen was asked by his wife Ida (whose names were combined into the company name Meyda) to build a stained glass window in their kitchen so they wouldn’t have to look at the vintage cars in their neighbor’s driveway. What began as a hobby evolved into America’s leading and oldest manufacturer of Tiffany lamps and decorative lighting.

More than a decade ago, Meyda acquired Quality Bent Glass Company which created original lighting fixtures, including the famous Coca-Cola chandeliers, and supplied them to Tiffany Studios in New York City, during the turn-of-the-century. Meyda utilizes QBG’s original tools, molds and techniques to create lighting products today.

In the mid-1990s, Meyda purchased Mecco Art, a metal art studio, and utilizes its equipment and manufacturing techniques to produce the Old Forge line of custom crafted steel sculptured lighting and decor. The line, which features original, natural and wildlife themes, includes lamps, chandeliers, figurines, candleholders, towel racks, bookends, switch plates, coat racks, napkin holders, log holders, fireplace screens, and other home accents.

Today Meyda is still a family-run business, with Meyer and Ida’s son, Robert, at the helm. With dealers across the U.S. and Canada, Meyda offers an extensive line featuring thousands of styles– from accent pieces to masterpieces. Many of Meyda’s lighting designs were inspired by the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Dirk Van Erp, Gustav Stickley, Philip Julius Handel, Pairpoint and Duffner & Kimberly Studios, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

What the heck is a Tiffany lamp anyway?

Author: LampLampLamp

Tiffany Table LampsWhen I was growing up and I heard the term “Tiffany Lamp” I always thought it mean the lamp came from the super-expensive store Tiffany’s.  Boy was I wrong.  I didn’t find out until recently that it was named after the guy who made the lamp style famours, Loous Tiffany.

Louis Comfort Tiffany (February 18, 1848 – January 17, 1933) was an American artist and designer who worked in the decorative arts and is best known for his work in stained glass and is the American artist most associated with the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements. Tiffany was affiliated with a prestigious collaborative of designers known as the Associated Artists which included Lockwood de Forest, Candace Wheeler, and Samuel Colman. Tiffany designed stained glass windows and lamps, glass mosaics, blown glass, ceramics, jewelry, enamels and metalwork.
