A brief intro to Meyda Tiffany Lamps
Thirty years ago, Meyda Tiffany was founded when Meyer Cohen was asked by his wife Ida (whose names were combined into the company name Meyda) to build a stained glass window in their kitchen so they wouldn’t have to look at the vintage cars in their neighbor’s driveway. What began as a hobby evolved into America’s leading and oldest manufacturer of Tiffany lamps and decorative lighting.
More than a decade ago, Meyda acquired Quality Bent Glass Company which created original lighting fixtures, including the famous Coca-Cola chandeliers, and supplied them to Tiffany Studios in New York City, during the turn-of-the-century. Meyda utilizes QBG’s original tools, molds and techniques to create lighting products today.
In the mid-1990s, Meyda purchased Mecco Art, a metal art studio, and utilizes its equipment and manufacturing techniques to produce the Old Forge line of custom crafted steel sculptured lighting and decor. The line, which features original, natural and wildlife themes, includes lamps, chandeliers, figurines, candleholders, towel racks, bookends, switch plates, coat racks, napkin holders, log holders, fireplace screens, and other home accents.
Today Meyda is still a family-run business, with Meyer and Ida’s son, Robert, at the helm. With dealers across the U.S. and Canada, Meyda offers an extensive line featuring thousands of styles– from accent pieces to masterpieces. Many of Meyda’s lighting designs were inspired by the works of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Dirk Van Erp, Gustav Stickley, Philip Julius Handel, Pairpoint and Duffner & Kimberly Studios, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

When I was growing up and I heard the term “Tiffany Lamp” I always thought it mean the lamp came from the super-expensive store Tiffany’s. Boy was I wrong. I didn’t find out until recently that it was named after the guy who made the lamp style famours, Loous Tiffany.
Louis Comfort Tiffany (February 18, 1848 – January 17, 1933) was an American artist and designer who worked in the decorative arts and is best known for his work in stained glass and is the American artist most associated with the Art Nouveau and Aesthetic movements. Tiffany was affiliated with a prestigious collaborative of designers known as the Associated Artists which included Lockwood de Forest, Candace Wheeler, and Samuel Colman. Tiffany designed stained glass windows and lamps, glass mosaics, blown glass, ceramics, jewelry, enamels and metalwork.
Tiffany lamps , like this 11.5″ Tiffany Style Roseborder Mini Lamp, enjoy a rich and storied history. Dating back to the lat 1800s these small wonders epitomize American and the art-deco movement of the late 20s.
Tiffany glass is the generic name used here to describe the many and varied types of glass developed and produced by Louis Comfort Tiffany, (1848-1933), one of the most famous stained glass artists of the United States and remembered not only for his windows but for decorative glass objects, in particular so-called Tiffany lamps.
In 1865 Tiffany traveled to Europe and in London he visited the Victoria and Albert Museum, whose extensive collection of Roman and Syrian glass made a deep impression on him. He admired the coloration of medieval glass and was convinced that the quality of contemporary glass could be improved upon.
In his own words, the “Rich tones are due in part to the use of pot metal full of impurities, and in part to the uneven thickness of the glass, but still more because the glass maker of that day abstained from the use of paint”.
Tiffany was an interior designer, and in 1878 his interest turned towards the creation of stained glass, when he opened his own studio and glass foundry because he was unable to find the types of glass that he desired in interior decoration. His inventiveness both as a designer of windows and as a producer of the material with which to create them was to become renowned.
I have a friend who’s a big fan of all things stained glass. She really enjoys the stained glass window hangings that modify the sunlight cast into the house. Providing uniquely rich colors and patterns these one-of-a-kind pieces create a warm, comforting glow reminiscent of centuries old churches and cathedrals. Capturing the essence and color of creative art is difficult to do but with something like the Ginkgo Window Tiffany stained glass window hanging it’s a snap.
It really is a no-brainer when it comes to authentic and comforting decor. Aside from figurines and other knick-knacks this is one of the easiest, most affordable ways to bring personality to any room. Soften your interior with a Tiffany Stained Glass Window Hanging and see just how easy it can be!
